In this visit Willie had two on field coaching sessions, private one on one coaching sessions, and trained both boys and girls in the CDP program. Also plans and discussions were held for taking the partnership forward in the future. Exciting things are on the horizon as we embark on four more years of Celtic.

Bria earned this honor by being picked by Celtic coaches at last summer’s Celtic summer camp. At Celtic, Bria trained with the 1st team and worked very closely with Gemma Fay, who is the most capped player on the Scottish Women’s National team history. In addition Bria received tickets to the Celtic Champions League qualifying match, and had a private tour of Celtic Park.

Bria is the 3rd player from our club since October to go to Scotland and train with Celtic, this is being done because of the ongoing partnership between our club and Glasgow Celtic. In the coming year there are 3 more players who are scheduled to go to Scotland via being picked at the Celtic summer camp.

On July 11 Celtic FC Youth Academy Head Coach Greig Robertson gave a well attended presentation at Belleair Town Hall that covered a variety of topics related to club. He discussed the importance of parents being positive role models. He also discussed the vision of Celtic FC as a football club, and the relationship between the club and it’s partners like Celtic FC Florida. It was a very informative presentation and great to hear from somebody who has developed relationships all over the world. See a clip below:

Celtic FC Florida held its second International Development Academy soccer camp in early July and three players were chosen to travel to Scotland to train at the Celtic Academy for a week. One of the three, Owen Huffman, travelled to Scotland on November 2, 2013 for a week of training with Celtic and experience Scotland firsthand.

The visit started with Owen and his father, Erin, attending the Celtic vs. Dundee United game which ended in a 1-1 draw. Following the game, taxis were a bit difficult to find due to the sheer volume of people so the boys ended up walking back to their hotel in the city of Glasgow in the cold light rain.

The following day Celtic picked them up at their hotel and took them to the beautiful fields in Lennoxtown where the Celtic first team trains and the youth play their home games. Owen got to watch the U-13’s and U-14’s play. He observed the speed, intensity and drive that these players play with at such a young age. Owen noted that the U-13’s played with a size 4 ball (change to size 5 at u-14), and that no linesmen were being utilized.

During the week, Owen trained daily with the U-13’s at their afternoon sessions. The majority of the players in the Celtic program attend the same school. Their typical day starts at 7am with a 90 minute training session before a shower and change before the school day begins. After school, they stay to do homework and eat (they eat breakfast, lunch and dinner all at the school). Owen arrived at the school an hour prior to the afternoon training to eat with the team and get to know them. Around 5pm, they start their second training session of the day for another 90 minutes. This schedule is the same Monday through Thursday with Friday been an exception when they are given the morning off.

During the days Owen wasn’t training, he and his father spent time sightseeing, shopping and getting to know the City. Owen said he had an incredible time playing with the Celtic team and thought coaches Greig and Willie were awesome and great to train with. If asked if he would go back, Owen said, “Say when”!!

On August 1st, the U14 girls embarked on a once in a lifetime trip over to Europe to both visit and train with the parent Club. The team had the opportunity to be fully integrated with the Celtic youth academy system. The girls trained in first class state of the art training facilities and were trained by Celtic coaches. As part of the visit they had lunch at Celtic Park stadium every day, played games versus international opposition and went to see Celtic play their opening game of the season at Celtic Park. Throughout the visit Jonathan Burns and John McStay, two of our camp coaches, accompanied the team providing both guidance, hosting and even support during the games.

The first game played was against the Celtic U14 Academy team. This was a highly competitive team that were solid throughout as you would expect from a team of this caliber. The girls from Florida were at a disadvantage from the start by playing on Astro turf and with a size 4 ball. Our girls provided good opposition but had to defend for our lives for large parts of the game. The girls overcame a dubious penalty kick which was saved and with 5 minutes left to play we were able to steal a goal and come away with a 1-1 tie. A great result for an American team.

The team played two other games, unfortunately losing both, but playing well and coming away with the respect of the opposition and the Celtic brass. The girls made friends, one girl is coming over for vacation to Florida and will train with us during the visit. The team also made memories that will last a lifetime experiencing not only the soccer aspects but also many of the cultural things Europe and in particular Scotland has to offer.

I believe every team at our club should go on this trip. If you see a parent who went on the trip go up to them and ask them how they felt about the trip. What we also received from this trip is the sense of what it is like to be a part of “Celtic” the honor it is and how it is a way of life, not just soccer. Truly a once in a lifetime trip

We will be adding pictures from the trip over the coming weeks so be sure to check back.
