Is Spring Soccer Co-ed?
Yes, Spring Soccer is co-ed for all age groups.
What age group will my child play in this season?
The age groups are U6, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19. The “U” stands for “under”. For example, 6 and 7 year olds play in the U8 division. However, your child’s “league age” is not the same as his/her current age. The “league age” is how old the child was before August 1st of last year. Your child’s age group fills in automatically when you register online.
With Spring Soccer, many players have “aged up” since August 1st of last year. So we manually adjust the playing groups. During the evaluation process, we closely look those players (ie: a player that was U8 in the Fall, but who has turned 8 since then). We assess their ability to play in the U10 age group for Spring. This also allows us to include many 4-yr olds that were not eligible to play in the Fall.
Also, depending on the number of registrants, we may combine age groups. For example, last year, we combined the older ages into two groups. The U12’s and U14’s played together in a “Middle School” group, and a small group of older players played in the “High School” group. Each year this grouping will vary slightly depending on the number of registrants.
What does it cost?
Registration Fee: $100
Fundraising
Each family is required to buy tickets to the Spring fundraising raffle ($20). The tickets can then be sold to family and friends, to recoup the initial cost.
What Equipment does my child need?
- Soccer ball (U6/U8 size 3, U10/U12 size 4, U14+ size 5)
- Cleats, shin guards, and a water bottle.
- The club will provide a T-shirt. Players wear their own shorts and socks.
When does the season start and end?
The following is a basic outline of the Season:
- Week 1 3/23-3/26 (2 days) Group Evaluations
- Weeks 2 &3 3/30-4/9 (4 days) Team Practices
- Weeks 4-8 4/13-5/14 (10 days) Games
- Week 8 5/16 (1 day) Festival
When are the practices and games?
All practices and games will be held during the week. The only scheduled Saturday commitment is the end-of-season Festival. However, we will also use Saturdays as makeup days for games and practices that get rained out on any given week.
Game times for the U6 and U8 players will always be at 6:00. The games last roughly an hour.
For the older ages, there will be two possible practice and/or game times: 6:00 or 7:15.
The Group Evaluation days (Week 1) will be set by the Club, based on the number of program registrants, and the availability of our evaluators. Those dates will be announced as we get closer to the beginning of the season. The team practice days (Weeks 2 and 3) will be coordinated with the coaches, to be optimized to their schedules. The games days (Weeks 4-8), however, will be set on a NON-REPEATING schedule. For example, one week, there may be games on Monday and Wednesday. And the following week, the games may be on Tuesday and Thursday. The rationale behind the non-repeating schedule is to even out the potential conflict days for those that are involved in activities outside of soccer, and to optimize field usage.
Where are the practices and games played?
Our Club has two field locations: SJWAA (Seminole Fields), and the Belleair Rec Center. The addresses for these fields can be found on our website. When you register, you will be asked for a field preference request. Please note that we cannot guarantee this request, but will try to do so depending on the number of players that register in each age group. The second factor that affects the location for where a team practices and plays is the preference of the Coach. Without the coaches, we have no teams. So try to give final preference to them.
In past years, we have had U6 and U8 teams at both field locations. But our U10 and older ages have played only at the Seminole fields. This will likely be the case this year. But as noted above, we cannot make final assignments until we finalize registration and assign coaches to teams.
Within any given age group, if we do have teams at both Seminole and Belleair, there will obviously be travel between the two facilities for games. The amount of travel will be proportional to the number of teams from each field location.
Can my child play on the same team as a Family Member, Friend or Coach?
During the online registration, there is a place to make a note or request. We try to grant all playing requests. But we cannot guarantee any requests. While we acknowledge the need to play with familiar friends and/or coaches, we also place a high priority on trying to create team parity, thru the Group Evaluations. Therefore, it is very important to attend both group evaluation sessions, where we rate the players’ abilities, and use those ratings, in conjunction with any requests and coaching volunteers, to form the teams. The Club reserves the right to re-distribute players, as needed to maximize team parity.
